Sample Kerr Lake’s postspawn topwater bite in late May

Topwater plugs like this Spook are great postspawn baits in late May at Kerr Lake.

One of the best postspawn bass bites in late May at Kerr Lake fires up offshore of small islands along the west side of Nutbush Creek between the Hibernia and Henderson Point ramps, and on the lake’s northern shoreline from Eastland to Butchers creeks.

This topwater bite usually occurs at month’s end and in the first couple of weeks of June.

Anglers fishing lures such as Zara Spooks, Spook Puppies, Pop-Rs, Chug Bugs or buzzbaits from deep water toward the islands’ shorelines. A 2- to 2 1/2-foot leader also can be tied to the nose of the plugs with the other end of the leader tied to a small Front Runner lure.

When retrieved with an erratic motion, the Front Runner will hop in front of a heavier topwater lure. The action resembles a chased baitfish and often triggers strikes, sometimes double hits with one bass hooked to the Front Runner and another snagged by the main lure.
