Largemouth chasing shad at Jordan Lake’s creeks

Largemouth bass are going to the major creeks at Jordan Lake during the fall shad migration.

Deer season has captivated many Triangle sportsmen during late September, including guide Jamie Olive of New Hill, who fishes Jordan lake.

“I haven’t been (on the lake) much because the guide business has slowed down so much because it’s deer season,” he said. “In fact, I’ve been (bow) hunting deer most days myself.

“But if I were going to Jordan Lake for largemouth bass now, I’d head to the major creeks.”

Olive said fall’s start has triggered the migration of shad into the backs of feeder creeks, and Jordan’s largemouth bass are moving in out and of those major tributaries to chase shad.

“They’re not out on the main lake right now,” he said. “Sometimes you can find bass staging on the points leading into creeks, stacked up, waiting to see if a school of shad will come by. Sometimes they’ll back in the backs where the shad are.”

His main lures to throw in late September and early October include spinnerbaits and jigs.

“Bass also can be caught on rip-rap (at the highway causeways and bridge overpasses and at the marinas),” Olive said.

Best lures to cast at rip rap includes spinnerbaits and jig-and-pigs.

“If they’re back in the creeks, I’d throw a spinnerbait and a ‘wake bait’ like a Mann’s Minus One,” he said. “If you find them all the way in the backs of the creeks, just throw spinnerbaits.”

Spinnerbaits are good shad imitators and a favorite lure of fall largemouth anglers.
