Frogs and toads

Frog baits come in several styles, from hollow-body (top) to keel-design (foreground).

Even though Ryan McMurtury only uses a soft-plastic green frog on Lake Russell, he has boxes of different types of frogs in various colors that he uses in different situations.

Frog baits come in three basic types: soft plastic, hollow-body and keel design with rattles.

The soft-plastic frogs include the 4-inch Zoom Horny Toad, the YUM Money Frog, Strike King Rage Toad, Gambler Cane Toad and Bass Pro Shops Humpin’ Toad.

McMurtury uses the weedless, hollow-bod-ied baits on lakes such as Clarks Hill that have matted vegetation like hydrilla.

Bass Pro Shop makes four types of hollow-bodied frogs; Scum Frog makes four sizes; SPRO makes the Bronzeye Popper, Bronzeye Frog and Bronzeye Jr.; and Bobby’s Perfect Frog is another popular make.

McMurtury uses frogs with a keel design and rattles when he is fishing shallow, open water. Keel-design frogs include River2Sea Billy WA and the Tru-Tungsten Mad Maxx Frog.
