Birthplace of the CATT trail

The Carolina Angler’s Team Trail (www.catttrail.com) features tournaments all over South Carolina, and it all started on Lake Wateree.

Brett Collins, who runs the trail, started it after fishing most weekends with friends on Wateree. Before long, they were all pitching in money to make things interesting and awarding the cash to the day’s winners. Collins’ friends began looking to him for rules and to act as judge for weigh-ins, and he eventually turned it into the the CATT.

Wateree is still the most-important lake to the CATT Trail, and in 2011, CATT paid out $66,500 in prize money on Lake Wateree. In comparison, the second-highest payout came on Lake Murray, at $31,220.

The all-time top money winner of the CATT Trail, Andy Owens, is a Lake Wateree angler. Owens has pocketed $34,286 in prize money since CATT’s inception, the majority coming from Lake Wateree.

Things will heat up for Collins even more this year on Lake Wateree. In addition to the CATT Trail, Collins will oversee the Carolina’s Bass Challenge (https://carolinasbasschallenge.com/), which will hold the South Carolina divisional final on Lake Wateree where the top place team will win a Skeeter bass boat.
