Bass in the grass

The grass might look dead this month, but it’s alive with bass.

Shallow alligator grass is present throughout Lake Wateree, and though it may look dead in March, it is anything but.

The grass serves as a hiding place for largemouth bass to ambush prey, and a variety of baits will catch fish in these weeds. These narrow, straight blades of grass usually don’t foul hooks like hydrillal, so don’t be shy about bringing lures right through it.

Buzzbaits and spinnerbaits are excellent lures here, but jigs can be deadly as well. Soft-plastic creature baits like Sweet Beaver, Berkley Havoc Pit Boss, or a Yum Wooly Bug are great choices, too, when rigged weightless or Texas-style.

When the water is fairly clear and at least 55 degrees, hollow-bodied topwater frogs like a Koppers Live Target Frog, Spro Bronzeye Popper or a Strike King KVD Sexy Frog add excitement to fishing these hawg hangouts. Cast into the grass and retrieve with a twitch-and-pause action, these lures will draw some ferocious strikes. A high-speed baitcaster mounted on a heavy-action rod will subdue fish before they can tangle themselves in the grass.
