Luke Johnson’s Randolph County beast!

Food plots, cameras, perseverance, and a little bit of luck pays off for 15-year-old Luke Johnson of Asheboro, N.C. It was three years of watching trail cams and year round feeding that finally allowed Luke to tag a trophy of a lifetime on Dec. 27, 2020.

Every Sunday Luke and his Dad would check cameras in the middle of the day as to not disturb their hunting areas. However, at 12:06 p.m. on that Sunday, they realized that right before they pulled up, the buck was feeding with two other smaller bucks, a clear sign the rut had ended.

They also realized that the deer had showed up in the daylight on multiple cameras for the past four days. So they decided to test their luck and hunt together that evening. At 5:25 p.m. the same three deer came in to feed. And at 5:30 pm, Luke’s .280 Ackley hit it’s mark.

The deer was estimated at 5-years-old and gross green-scored 162 inches with an impressive inside spread measuring 22 inches. What a tremendous whitetail harvest for Randolph county, one that Luke and his dad will never forget.
