Four-year-old Avery Barringer of Gold Hill, N.C. killed her first turkey on April 3, 2022 during a hunt in Cabarrus County. The 21-pound gobbler sported a 10.5-inch beard and 1-inch spurs. She was hunting with her dad, who said he couldn’t be more proud.

“It was just earlier that day that she decided that she was ready to turkey hunt. After some target practice and an outfit change, we hit the woods,” said Avery’s dad, Gunnar Lee Barringer.

Once in the woods, the gobbler cooperated nicely, giving Avery a shot less than an hour after the start of the hunt. The young hunter shot the turkey with a .410 Stevens.

“Thirty minutes later, we had one in our lap putting on a show. She made a perfect shot! Proud is an understatement. I can’t put into words how excited I was. Good job baby girl, you have one proud daddy right now,” her dad said.
