Josh Ferrier kills Cabarrus County 22-pound gobbler

Josh Ferrier of Albemarle, N.C. killed a 22-pound gobbler in Cabarrus County on North Carolina’s opening day of the 2021 turkey hunting season. The turkey had a 10.5-inch beard and 1 1/8-inch spurs.

By all accounts, it was a textbook hunt for the avid outdoorsman, who works for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Ferrier did his homework, making sure he knew where several turkeys were roosting the previous evening.

“I roosted three longbeards in the same red oak tree on Friday evening. Then I got in early on opening morning and set up 100 yards from that tree,” said Ferrier.

As the morning began to break, he made a few calls, then sat back to allow his big turkey to get itself into hot water.

“I did a few tree yelps and a fly down call to fire the gobblers up. All three came in at 10 yards in full strut. I took the biggest one,” he said.

We’d say that’s a great way to start the season! Click here if you’d like your photo and story featured at Carolina Sportsman.
