Patience pays off
Two weeks into this spring turkey season I was given a chance to go after a gobbler that had been hunted by three hunters for the first two weeks of the season. I personally had chased this gobbler the last season and a half prior, so I had a past with this particular gobbler.
The first evening I got eyes on this bird strutting for a hen along with two jakes. My yelps drove the jakes and gobbler from the field but brought the hen into range. The next morning I tried a new tactic, one single cluck rather than any yelps. I vowed every single time that this gobbler gobbled, I would not yelp. Every fifth gobble, I simple clucked.
After several long hours of waiting, these call shy birds showed themselves in the food plot and came into range. While this may not be the hunt for a TV show, sometimes we just need to do something a little different to fill that tag.
