Godfrey shot the buck with a crossbow

Shane Godfrey of Sanford, NC killed an 8-point buck in Lee County, NC on Sept. 15, 2024. He shot the buck with his crossbow during an evening hunt with his 7-year-old son Easton.

Godfrey was in a ground blind when he shot the buck from 35 yards away, then tracked it about 70 yards. He had seen the buck on trail camera footage numerous time before the hunt.

The hunt was originally intended so that Easton would shoot the deer, but circumstances changed the plan.

“My son Easton and I got settled into the ground blind in hopes of him getting a shot on a nice buck,” said Godfrey. “At about 6:40 p.m., my son finished his bag of Lays BBQ chips. Then, 10 minutes later a small buck stepped out, then two 8-point bucks stepped out. I tried everything to get my son set up for a shot, but the wind changed, and they were locked onto our location. A few seconds go by, and they start to walk off. My son said ‘dad take the shot on the big one.’ Literally, a last second shot made for a good placement of the arrow entering behind the right shoulder, going through the heart, and coming out the left shoulder blade. The buck ran 70 yards leaving a trail for me and my son to follow. The excitement in my son’s face and voice when we discovered the 19-inch wide 8-pointer made the hunt a memory I’ll never forget.”
