She was snakebitten by a copperhead
Madison Leggett of Harleyville, SC killed an Orangeburg County buck on Sept. 5, 2024, days after being snakebitten by a copperhead. The 5-point buck helped take the pain away from the snake bite, she said.
She shot the buck with a Weatherby 7mm from her elevated stand 250 yards away. The buck dropped on the spot.
She’d hunted the same stand on Aug. 31, when the snake bite occured.
“I hunted this stand on Aug. 31 until dark, when I saw multiple deer.” she said. “I was sneaking out of the stand while I had two smaller bucks on the corn. I didn’t turn my light on and stepped on a copperhead. I was in the hospital until Sept. 2.”
Once out of the hospital, she began healing up, anxious to get back in the woods.
“I left out of there and decided to wait to hunt for a couple of days,” she said.
On her first day back, she got a glimpse of this buck, but didn’t have a clear shot at it.
“I went on Sept. 4 to the same stand,” she said. “I was paying attention to a doe to my right, but looked to my left and what I believe was this buck, was in the road. I didn’t get a shot due to him walking straight across.”
But she didn’t call it quits at that. The next day, she was back at it.
“I decided to go back the next day, got to the stand and he was on the corn. I snuck up the stand and killed him. Made the snake bite worth the while!” she said.
