12-point buck was highlight of special day of hunting

Jeff Dabbs of Fort Mill, SC was hunting in Lancaster County on Oct. 22, 2022 when he killed a 12-point buck he’d been hunting for a solid week. The buck had a 20-inch spread and has been green-scored at 130 inches.

His first sighting of the buck this season was on Oct. 15. He didn’t have a clean shot at it that evening, but he decided to stay at it until he got another chance.

“I saw this deer on Oct. 15 right at dusk dark about 300 yards away. I hunted him hard for the next week,” said Dabbs.

His efforts obviously paid off. The 12-point buck wasn’t a complete stranger to Dabbs. He’d noticed it on trail camera photos during the 2021 season. But it was a little smaller then.

“I had him on camera last year, but he was a 10-pointer then,” he said.

Dabbs was hunting from a tripod stand looking over a cutover. The buck showed up at 9 a.m., and Dabbs shot it with a .30-30 from 165 yards away. The deer dropped immediately.

It was a special hunt for Dabbs, and not just because he killed a nice buck.

“The hunt was special because my son and grandson were with me. We actually doubled up. We were hunting the same cutover and they both got to see me shoot this deer,” he said.
