Morning

Where we hunt – most all of our stands are set up for rifle hunting. I had wanted to get a crossbow to allow me to hunt archery season. My 25th birthday was on 9/12/24 and my Dad gave me a Barnett crossbow as a birthday present. We sighted the crossbow in on Saturday 9/14, the day before the season opened. On Sunday 9/15 I slipped into the Buzzards Roost. A box stand overlooking a small plot of clover. We had pictures of this buck on camera and we called him “Handlebars” because his rack is so wide and looks like handlebars on a bike. Just after daybreak on opening morning Handlebars slipped into the food plot. As he quartered away from me at about 25 yards I fired my crossbow. The Rage broad head pierced the vitals and buried in the opposite shoulder. As Handlebars exploded out of the food plot into the thick woods- I could see the arrow fletchings sticking out of the deer. I thought I heard him crash but wasn’t certain. I text my Dad who was hunting nearby. After about half an hour my Dad joined me and we went to recover the deer. He ran into a pretty thick area and there was no blood trail- probably because the arrow didn’t pass through. We spilt up and my Dad found Handlebars piled up about 50 yards in the thick woods. We were so excited. What a hunt! This was my personal best buck and I killed him with a brand new crossbow!
