Jace Atkinson kills Darlington County 8-point buck

8-point buck8-point buck weighed 180 pounds

Jace Atkinson of Hartsville, SC killed an 8-point buck on the evening of Sept. 3, 2024 in Darlington County. It was a deer that he had on his hit list, after getting glimpses of it. He nicknamed the buck “crown,” and when he saw it that evening, he immediately recognized it.

Atkinson shot the buck with a Savage Axis 308 from 60 yards away while hunting from an elevated stand. The deer, which weighed 180 pounds, dropped immediately.

A change in weather prompted the 19-year-old hunter to get in the stand early, but his early arrival wasn’t a factor

“This cold front pushed in, so I decided to go get in the stand, because I thought the deer would move earlier than normal,” he said. “I got in the stand around 5:30 and sat down. I didn’t see a single deer until it started to get dark.”

Then, a big show started.

“Two bucks came out and started fighting on the corn pile. The after that, they were everywhere, coming from every way,” he said. “Whenever I saw the big buck I had name Crown, it was a no-doubt shot.”

It’s the biggest buck Atkinson has killed so far, and he is thankful for the hunt.

“I couldn’t be any more blessed to have the opportunity at harvesting him!” he said.
