Wesley Herring’s Marion County 8

Marion County 8-point buck showed up late

Wesley Herring of Marion, SC killed a Marion County 8-point buck on Sept. 3, 2024 during an evening hunt from a ground blind. He shot the buck from 83 yards away with a .270 Winchester.

Herring had seen photos of the buck on his trail cameras. He tells his story here:

“I got off work around 6:45 from WestRock paper mill. While I was sitting in the parking lot fixing to leave something told me to go sit in the ground blind. So I called my wife and told her I was going to sit till at least 7:30. Once I got to my ground I had made it just in time because as soon as I sat down the does started pouring in. After a few minutes a couple small bucks showed up and I watched for a bit. I texted my wife and I told her I was fixing to leave. I put my phone in my pocket and just glanced up one more time and coming out making a b line straight to me was a tall 9 I’ve been seeing on my trail camera. I said to myself “well if you’re here then your buddy isn’t too far behind you”. So I started watching the 9 through my scope and all of a sudden a wide set of antlers popped up directly behind the 9. I gave a second to come on to try and get a nice shot but he just wasn’t giving it to me. All I could see was his head to a couple inches in front of his shoulder. Took a deep breath and I let him have it. Not a trace of blood, no dirt kicked up, not one sign that he was hit. I walked into swamp about 15 yards down the path they had been walking and there he was laying between two white oaks.” –Wesley Herring
