12-point buck weighed 180 pounds
Cayden Lucas, 12-years-old from Swansea, SC, killed a 12-point, full velvet buck in Orangeburg County on Aug. 18, 2024. It was a buck his trail cameras had taken photos of leading up to the season. Because he knew this buck was in the area, he passed on some smaller bucks during the hunt, hoping the big 12-pointer would show up.
His patience paid off when the buck stepped out of the power line about 80 yards away in a bottom. The young hunter took careful aim and pulled the trigger. He was positive he’d hit the deer, but he stayed put until his uncle came to get him from the stand. They began tracking the buck on one side of the muddy bottom.
Lucas had no doubt that his aim was true, and said the last thing he remembered was the deer running toward the stand, then all went quiet.
Shortly after that, his dad showed up on the opposite side of the bottom, by the stand. He was wearing flip flops and shorts, and stumbled upon the giant buck. Lucas had made a perfect shot, and they found the buck piled up 50 yards away from where it was hit, and about 25 yards from the stand.
Lucas shot the buck with a 6.5 Creedmoor.
