Ahyler Derrick shot the buck at 120 yards
Hunting in Lexington County, SC on Aug. 15, 2024, Ahyler Derrick of Leesville killed a trophy 8-point buck that weighed 195 pounds. He shot the deer with a rifle from 120 yards away at about 8:15 p.m. while sitting in an elevated stand with his dad and brother, who had not planned to be there at first.
Derrick was familiar with the buck through pictures from his trail camera.
The hunt began with the 12-year-old realizing he’d forgotten an important piece of gear.
“I was sitting in the stand with my dad,” said Derrick. “Once we got in, we realized we forgot my gun rest. So my dad texted my mom to get my twin brother to bring it to me. Then he stayed with us and got to witness the shot as well. Last year he killed one on opening day. This year it was my turn.”
