12-point buck was youth hunter’s second deer

While hunting in Chesterfield County, SC on Oct. 9, 2022, 11-year-old Tanner Starnes killed a 12-point buck. The deer has been green-scored at 134+ inches. Starnes shot the buck from 50 yards away with his AR-15.

This was the young hunter’s second ever deer, and first buck he’s ever killed. It weighed a hefty 216 pounds.

The evening of the hunt was the first encounter he’d ever had with the buck. He’d never even seen trail camera photos of the deer. Starnes was sitting in a stand overlooking a cutover when the big buck showed up. Once he pulled the trigger on his 300 Blackout, he watched the buck run into the tree line where it crashed into a tree, shaking it vigorously before going down. That made the 40-yard tracking job an easy one for Starnes.
