North Carolina huntress wins October Bag-A-Buck Contest

Laura Tucker of Manson, N.C. won the CarolinaSportsman.com October Bag-A-Buck contest with a nice 8-point buck she killed in a spot that has special meaning for her.

8-point buck at spot of husband’s proposal is a winner

Laura Tucker of Manson, N.C., killed a nice 8-point buck in a very special place late in the afternoon on Oct. 27.

Tucker dropped the buck, which had a 17 1/2-inch spread, from a stand overlooking a food plot of turnips and oats in a power line right-of-way in Warren County. She was in a stand with her husband, Preston Richardson, close to the spot where he proposed marriage to her.

“He had a trail camera set up, and a shed trap, and we went out to check the trap,” Tucker said. “There was a shed in the trap, and when I bent down to get it, there was a note on it that said, ‘Marry me,’ and he was on his knees behind me.”

On Oct. 28, Tucker entered her buck in Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest, and she was drawn Oct. 31 as the winner of the monthly contest for October. Her prizes are a $25 gift certificate to the Sportsman’s Online Store, and a year’s subscription to the magazine. She will remain eligible, along with every other contest entrant, in the drawing for the grand prize: a three-year subscription to Carolina Sportsman, a $50 gift certificate to the Sportsman’s Online Store, and a two-day deer-hog combo hunt for two people to Cherokee Run Hunting Lodge near Chesterfield, S.C.

Tucker actually said “yes” several times: to the proposal, when Richardson asked her to go hunting with him that day, and when the buck showed up.

“He asked me to go with him and sit in this stand,” she said. “I wasn’t planning on going that day, but I told him, ‘If I go and one comes out, I’m not going to sit there and watch.’ So he said I would shoot if he came out on the left and he’d shoot if he came out on the right. He came out on the left.”
