Events are free, and will cover wide range of outdoor topics
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering several outdoor events and programs in September at its Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in Transylvania County.
All events are free and open on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pre-registration is required for all events except National Hunting and Fishing Day.
– Nature Nuts: Raccoons – Sept. 25 from 9-11 a.m. For ages 4-7. Participants will learn about raccoons, listen to stories, play games and do crafts related to raccoons, and take a hike to see if they can spot any tracks or signs of the masked mammal.
– Eco Explorers: Archery – Sept. 25 from 1-2:30 p.m. For ages 8-13. This program is a great opportunity for beginners to learn about archery including how to shoot a bow and arrow safely and the different styles of bows and arrows. They’ll put their newly acquired knowledge to the test by practicing shooting at targets.
– National Hunting and Fishing Day– Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For all ages. This family-friendly event includes hands-on activities that highlight the Tar Heel state’s fishing, hunting and wildlife conservation heritage. Activities include: archery, BB gun shooting range, tree stand safety, fly tying and casting, outdoor cooking, and much more.
– Hunter Education Course – Sept. 23 & 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This two-day course is open to all ages and is required for all first-time hunting license buyers in North Carolina. Certification is accepted in every state. Topics covered include hunter responsibility and firearms. Attendees must complete the course successfully and attend both days.
Wildlife Commission staff will be at the Mountain State Fair with a new exhibit featuring several kid-related, hands-on activities such as a papier-mâché tree trunk with animal pelts inserted into “knot holes” that children can touch, as well as synthetic “scat” that children can touch and identify. The Mountain State Fair, located in Fletcher, will run from Sept. 11 through Sept. 20, and the Commission’s exhibit will open from 3-10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m., Friday through Sunday, except Sunday, Sept. 20, when the exhibit will close at 9 p.m.

The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is located near Brevard, just south of Asheville, by the Davidson River in Transylvania County. The center features nature trails and five large aquariums representing aquatic mountain habitats. The center is adjacent to the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, where trout are raised in 54 raceways. The center’s hours of operation through November are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
