NCWRC announces some gill-net closures, reopening of some game lands

Interactions with sea turtles has forced the NCWRC to close some estuarine areas to gill nets.

A few gamelands remained closed

The NCWRC recently announced estuarine waters in several areas have been closed to anchored gill nets because of unacceptably high interactions with sea turtles. These areas were closed on Oct. 16, and will remain closed for a minimum of two weeks, which will give turtles a chance to leave the areas.

The waters in Management Unit A have been closed. Management Unit A includes all of Albemarle, Currituck, Croatan, and Roanoke Sounds and their tributaries. Large-mesh and small-mesh anchored gill nets are all prohibited under this closure.

Parts of Management Unit B are also closed. The northern portion of Core Sound and the eastern Pamlico Sound are closed to large-mesh anchored gill nets. The remaining part of Management Unit B, which includes western Pamlico Sound, remains open.

Some other NCWRC closures are also still in effect for roads on several game lands. The Lower Roanoke River Wetlands Game Land in Bertie and Martin counties are closed. Buckridge Game Land in Tyrrell County are closed, and Holley Shelter Game Land in Pender County are also closed.  These areas will remain closed until the NCWRC finds the flooding has receded enough to make the roads driveable.

The NCWRC also recently reopened Juniper Creek Game Land, Alligator River Game Land, and Chowan Swamp Game Land.
