The state record at the time of the catch, the fish was eclipsed by a 33-pound catfish caught the same year that was only recently discovered to have been a flathead catfish. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has certified Bowden's fish, caught at City Lake in Rocky Mount, as the reigning state record.
