Windy weather heats up action in Santee Cooper’s Diversion Canal

Channel catfish have been hitting stinkbaits in Santee Cooper's Diversion Canal.

An unrelenting wind has kept a lot of fishermen off Santee Cooper’s wide-open waters lately.

For fishermen targeting catfish, that’s been a blessing in disguise.

Kevin Davis, who owns and guides out of Black’s Camp, said the Diversion Canal that connects Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie has been site of most of the most recent action.

“There are some blues being caught in Lake Moultrie on cut and whole shad, drifting on drops in 25 to 35 feet of water,” said Davis (843-753-2231). “But the flatheads are hitting live white perch in the Diversion Canal at night.

“Fishermen are just anchoring up in the middle of canal and fishing.”

And channel catfish have been “stacked” in the Canal, Davis said. “They’ve been catching a lot of channel cats on stinkbaits during the daytime and nighttime. They can’t get out on the big lakes to catch big fish, but they’re doing pretty well.”
