Coronavirus shuts down Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic

The SCDNR has canceled the 2020 Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic, which was scheduled for March 27 – 29. The agency cited concerns related to the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic as the reason for canceling the event. Dan DuPre, Special Events Coordinator with SCDNR said it was a tough decision to make. The agency issued the following statement:

I must inform you that the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic is CANCELED for this year, March 27-29, 2020 at the S.C. Fairgrounds in Columbia, S.C.  The decision to cancel is due to concerns surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), now a pandemic.  The health and wellbeing of South Carolinians and others traveling to South Carolina’s largest hunting, fishing and outdoor expo remain our top concern.  We must take every precaution to protect the tens of thousands of attendees, vendors and volunteers expected to attend the event.

This year’s Classic, which is held annually at the S.C. State Fairgrounds, was set to feature more than 325 vendors selling hunting, fishing, and other outdoor gear, clothing, and specialty items. The SCDNR was expecting a record crowd until the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States.

Wild game dinner and auction postponed

The Second Annual Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund‘s Wildlife Ball Wild Game Dinner and Auction, scheduled for March 26 has been postponed, also due to coronavirus concerns. This dinner and auction was set to raise money for various SCDNR-sponsored programs.

Unlike the Classic, which was canceled with no makeup date, the dinner and auction is being rescheduled. Event organizers are working on securing a new date and expect to make an announcement soon with new details.

The SCDNR said at this time, no offices, gun ranges, or any other properties are being closed down because of the coronavirus. However, they did cancel the S.C. Archery in the Schools Program state championship, which was scheduled for March 24 – 26 at the Sumter Civic Center.
