In the fish-eat-fish world, having acute sensory systems is a critical life component for a fish. Their sensory organs are highly developed and unique, and they use all their senses each and every day to eat, detect currents and sense any potential dangers.
Since red drum have somewhat poor vision, their chemoreception is powerful and can be a bonus for anglers looking for an edge in red drum territory. Anglers using scented lures can expect their chances for hookups to increase at least two-fold.
Fish are equipped with the ability to hear and see, just as any other living organism on the planet, but they have other unique sensory receptors unique to fish that detect a wide range of stimuli in the water. They can detect gentle currents and vibrations through their lateral line and smell and taste in the water through their chemoreception sensors. Red drum are one of the fish living in estuaries that rely on them to locate food.
According to guide Jot Owens, scented lures definitely help his success rate.
“Using Gulp! baits embedded with scent or soft-plastic lures sprayed with a shrimp spray definitely will help you catch redfish,” he said. “There’s no denying that. Scented baits are extremely important for catching redfish. They will pick up these baits off the bottom like cut bait.”
As soon as these baits hit the water, the scent disperses in places with little current and will travel downstream in places with swift current. According to Owens, scented baits can attract redfish from as far as 20 feet away.
In addition to using Gulp! baits already embedded with scent, he will use Gulp! shrimp spray.
“I have used several of the 11 different flavors, but shrimp is my favorite. Everything eats shrimp,” he said.
