“Mama, That Felt Like a Rocket”

Grayson Truluck of Hopkins, SC killed an 8-point buck in Aiken County, SC on Oct. 25, 2026.

He shot the buck with a Browning x-bolt medallion 270 wsm during an afternoon hunt while sitting in an elevated stand from 170 yards away.

Truluck’s mom summed up the hunt with these words:

“‘Mama, That Felt Like a Rocket!’
At just 5-years-old, my little boy and I climbed into a deer stand together for the very first time. Little did we know, we were about to make a memory that neither one of us would ever forget!
When a nice 8-point buck stepped out, my little hunting buddy climbed up into my lap. I quietly reminded him of everything we had talked about, from getting the deer lined up in his crosshairs to where he needed to aim. Once he was settled in, I told him, I’m going to count to three, and when I get to three, you pull that trigger and hold on tight!”
Now, anybody who has ever shot a .270 WSM knows that rifle has some kick behind it. And I’m sitting there thinking to myself, Well, this is either going to make him or break him!
So I started counting…”One…THREE!”
BOOM!
He pulled that trigger and harvested his very first buck, a beautiful 8-point weighing 178 pounds!
As soon as the shot was over, he climbed down off my lap. I got the rifle back on safety, turned around to check on him, and there he stood, grinning from ear to ear!
“MAMA, THAT FELT LIKE A ROCKET!”🤣
And just like that, I knew that rifle hadn’t broken him one bit!
That day, my little boy got his first buck, but this mama got something even better- a memory I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.
Five-years-old. Eight points. 178 pounds. One rocket of a first hunt!”
