Wilson dedicated 10-point buck to a recently passed friend
Cody Wilson of Lancaster, SC killed a 10-point buck in Kershaw County in September 2021 from 150 yards away in an elevated box stand. He shot the deer with a .300 WinMag.
Wilson shares his story with us here:
“Well I’ve been hunting in Kershaw County since I was a little boy on the same land for over 20 years. A really great friend of mine that was president of the club from the start of the club had an unexpected heart attack. Scott was like my dad, he meant more to me than anyone on this earth. He took me hunting ever since I was a little boy on this land.
Scott was with me when I killed my first 10-point ever, but unfortunately he had passed away by the time I killed this buck. I know he was looking down on me from heaven. Once he passed away it was super hard to get the motivation to go hunting again, but I’m glad I kept pushing because I killed this buck for him. He would be so happy to see me not give up and keep hunting.
I hunt everyday for that man, not myself. That was the first big deer I’ve killed since he has passed away, so that deer meant a lot to me. That deer was Scott helping me get thru his sudden passing. I’ve had one day of trail cam pics of that deer in daylight, and never again over a year’s time. I thought maybe that deer was just passing thru or maybe got hit by a car because I never saw him again until the day I killed him. So I dedicate this deer to my buddy Scott Brown.
Scott was a legend and an even bigger legend in the deer woods.
The deer came out with a bachelor group of about three 8-points and he was leading the pack. He walked off my front lane and it took them 20 minutes to walk out on my other shooting lane I have cut through the bushes. I actually was gonna lounge around and not hunt that day at all, but old lady woke me up and said are you not gonna go hunt today? I said probably not I’m tired and it’s hot. She said well that’s not like you, you should go today and I’ll go with you if you want. I said well I reckon let’s go.
So we went to the woods, hunted through the heat, then once it cooled down some and got a little later, they all stepped out. I told her hey I’ll let you shoot any decent buck that comes out tonight as long as it isn’t that 10-point, but I haven’t seen him on camera but one time a year ago, so I doubt he will show up today. Well I was wrong. The hunt was a little overwhelming considering my buddy had just recently passed, so it was bittersweet to say the least. So at the end of the day I want to honor my buddy Scott, and dedicate this deer hunt to him.”
