Go with a grub

A jighead and soft-plastic grub is a winter trout-killler.

Butch Foster of Yeah Right Charters said his go-to lure in the Cape Fear River and the creeks off the ICW near Southport is a Haw River curlytail grub in smoke/silver metal flake on a jighead.

Because it’s often windy in December and because of strong current flow in the area, he uses a 3/8-ounce jighead most of the time. It’s easier to cast and will get more quickly to the deeper water where most speckled trout are living.

The heavier jighead is also better for trolling in the strong current.
