WMA lands with woodcock cover

Many of South Carolina’s WMAs have the kind of habitat that can put a bird dog on top of a woodcock.

For woodcock, biologist Billy Dukes of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources suggests several public hunting opportunities availabilities on WMAs. All have attractive bottomland associated with various river systems.

The upper regions of Crackerneck WMA in Aiken County have good hardwood and switch cane habitat along tributaries of the Savannah River. Hunting is restricted to Fridays and Saturdays during the small-game season. Sumter National Forest has bottomland along the Enoree and Tyger Rivers. Manchester State Forest borders the Wateree River, and the huge Woodbury WMA in Marion County contains parts of the Great Pee Dee and the Little Pee Dee river basins.

Most areas are open throughout the woodcock season, but hunting is not allowed on Sundays on WMA lands.
