Tips for floating rivers

Piling brush on the front of the boat and using a sculling paddle to maneuver the boat are two tips for killing float hunt ducks.

Leave the dog at home. Dogs present a risk of capsizing or jumping out of the boat when you ground.

If you jump ducks out of range and you have time allotted in your float, set up in that location and wait 30 to 45 minutes. Ducks often return to an area they found attractive after a fly-over to see if the danger has passed.

Try threading some leafy brush on the front of the boat. To ducks downstream, this makes you look like floating debris.

Resist the urge to call. This is jump-shooting, and ducks on the water don’t respond the same to calls as flying ducks.

Pack spare clothes in a dry box. A fall in the water in January can be life threatening due to hypothermia.

Wear a shell belt. Belts keep shells organized, at your fingertips and not rolling around in the bottom of the kayak.

Bring a short sculling paddle. Make one from an old wooden oar. This lets you maneuver the boat with one hand while bringing the gun up with the other.
