Opinions vary on the perfect woodcock gun. Purists may insist on a classic side-by-side classic English double gun in 20-gauge, possibly with a straight grip.
Many hunters now lean toward the over/under versions, and almost everyone agrees on using a small gauge. A quail gun in 20- or 28-gauge with a 28-inch barrel is about perfect for woodcock, though some hunters would argue for a 26-inch barrel to swing better in heavy brush. The key is being able to swing quickly on the fleeing targets.
Select 3/4 ounce of Nos. 7 1/2 or 8 shot for the 28-gauge and 1-ounce shells in 20-gauge. Woodcock are small but fragile targets, so high pellet count avoids having them fly through a pattern.
