Public waterfowl areas are great draws

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources manages dozens of areas for public waterfowl hunting.

Waterfowlers who aren’t lucky enough to have their own private water to hunt have a friend in the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, which manages numerous waterfowl management areas specifically for hunting — and many of them are available only to walk-in hunting.

A list of these management areas is available at www.dnr.sc.gov/mlands/waterfowl.

These area are broken down into two categories. Category I areas offer the highest-quality hunting, and feature habitat that SCDNR manages extensively to bring in a larger concentration of waterfowl. They are only open to hunters who have been selected in SCDNR’s waterfowl hunt drawing system.

Category II areas are open on designated days to hunters on a first-come, first-serve basis, but this doesn’t mean only one group of hunters get to rule the roost when they show up. These management areas are large and can accommodate scores of hunters.

Open days and hours vary for these areas, so outdoorsmen should check these details at www.dnr.sc.gov/mlands/waterfowl.
