Mark that duck down

Not every duck knocked down falls into open water for easy retrieval. Make sure you mark down every duck that falls so you don’t lose any.

Retrieving ducks from beaver ponds or other small bodies of water can be a bit tricky.

If you are not relying on a well-trained dog, marking the fall of the ducks is critical. Many ponds have tall grasses, weeds, cane and timber, and ducks can and do fall anywhere. Mark them well or you will spend hours looking for the prize.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of shooting that you forget to mark your bird, but a bird shot is worth recovering, so look carefully and mark well.

Having a good small boat on standby is also a good idea. A kayak, canoe or small creek boat have saved many a duck and duck hunter.

Don’t forget the geese. One of the benefits of these small bodies of water is that geese love to lounge in these areas. Look for the larger areas where geese have plenty of areas to land and take off and you can combine your bag
