Prime Piedmont tactics

Stream bottoms are great spots to run into turkeys in the Piedmont, because their banks are often filled with acorn-producing oak trees.

Tommy Kirby of Willow Oaks Plantation in Rockingham County is on the same page with his boss, Arthur Dick, when it comes to cutting down on the amount of calling a turkey hunter does and paying more attention to location.

“Most of my turkey hunting buddies are hardly calling at all now,” Kirby said. “Another trend today is for hunters to be more tuned in on what the turkeys are eating when not much gobbling is going on. For example, many of the Piedmont streams are part of the Roanoke River basin.

“Those stream bottoms have a lot of mast-bearing trees, and in years when the hard-mast crop has been strong, the turkeys will still be feeding in those bottoms when the spring season begins. All this makes stream bottoms prime strutting grounds.”
