Play that trumpet

Trumpets like these that Charles Hudson makes produce some of the best sounds of any turkey call — once you learn to master them.

Trumpet calls are often overlooked by turkey hunters. Also known as “artificial wing bones”, these calls are a bit more difficult to master than a box, slate or diaphragm call, but they produce the pure sounds that are difficult to mimic with other calls.

Trumpets are crafted from natural wing bones or from fine, exotic woods and bone; they are a go-to call in Charles Hudson’s arsenal, and he makes and sells them from his home in Traveler’s Rest.

Sounds are made through a trumpet call by “sucking” air back through the call with the hands cupped around the larger or “bell” end. Hunters learn to make different calls by the way they suck air through the call and adjust their hands to allow more or less air into the call.
