Raccoon hunters must contend with dense swamp vegetation, wet ground, ditches and creeks. They wear cloth-faced hip boots to help deflect briars and enable them to walk through shallow water.
Water that is deeper than the tops of hip boots is sometimes crossed by walking or shinnying across the water on a fallen tree. Bold hunters often go into the water deeper than their hip boots, filling them with cold water. Seasoned hunters find a way around the water by circling the area in a pickup or on foot.
A GPS unit with a mapping feature helps sort out potential pathways to get to treed raccoon in the dark.
