Dixie Deer Classic only three weeks away

The Dixie Deer Classic will feature hundreds of deer killed during the past season, along with many other outdoor-related seminars and events.

Wildlife and natural resource management, NASCAR, a Super Bowl Champion, outdoors television personalities, conservation partners, special prizes and classroom credits are open to the public, March 4-7 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side, being held in conjuction with the Dixie Deer Classic, offers 96 hours of free, hands-on wildlife and natural resource workshops for middle school and high school students in the Kerr Scott Building on March 4 and 5. The Dixie Deer Classic, North Carolina’s premier outdoors expo, officially opend March 5, and offers everything imaginable for hunters and other outdoorsmen of all ages.

Classic events include:
• Youth Day – Friday, March 5. All youth under 13 are admitted free. Youth aged 13 through 18 pay only half price, $5.

• Outdoor Lore – Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Entertaining and informative seminars and workshops aimed at taking away the mystery for and piquing the interes of aspiring anglers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts will be conducted by conservation partners from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, North Carolina State University’s Fisheries and Wildlife Program, the North Carolina State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the North Carolina State Chapter of the Quality Deer Management Association, the Wake County Wildlife Club and others.

• Wildlife Scavenger Hunt – Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Youth from pre-school through high school will follow a map to knowledgeable conservation partners to learn more about wildlife management, safety and responsible behavior in North Carolina’s outdoors. Those who successfully complete the scavenger hunt, sponsored by NRA Youth Programs, will be entered into drawings for special prizes. The first 500 participants on Youth Day (March 5) will receive a NRA Youth Programs T-shirt, pin, certificate and other prizes. NCSU’s Leopold Wildlife Club designed the questionnaire and conducts this event.

• Professional Track Wildlife Habitat Management Seminar – Foresters and other outdoors professionals are offered CEU credits for this seminar on land management and early succession habitat. Includes presentations by professionals from North Carolina Forest Resources, NCWRC, National Wildlife Federation, the U.S. Forest Service and the Quality Deer Management Association. • Special Guests and Events – A NASCAR car from Richard Childress Racing, Michael Waddell from Realtree and The Bone Collector, Lee and Tiffany Lakosky from Scentlok’s “The Crush,” the North Carolina National Wild Turkey Federation-Dixie Deer Classic TARHEEL OPEN sanctioned calling contest, NWTF Call Makers Competition, State Awards Banquets for NWTF and the North Carolina Bowhunters Association, George Thornton, CEO of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Dr. James Earl Kennamer, Chief Conservation Officer of NWTF, Dave Butz, NFL Super Bowl Champion and NRA Youth Program Committee Chair, 3-D Archery Tournament, shopping with more than 300 vendors and North Carolina’s biggest and best whitetails on display.
