Gary Barrett has three bucks on his office wall: the 2006 and 2007 trophies, and a third one that comes with a different story.
“During the 2001 season, my friend, Gary Brown, and I were walking through a cow pasture here in the middle of the day, looking for places to hang an evening stand,” Barrett said. “At the other side of the pasture, some workers were moving cows from one field to another, and they spooked this giant buck.
“A little while earlier, Gary had dropped his gun in the mud and the barrel was still all clogged up, so he couldn’t shoot. But I could shoot and did.”
The result was a 9-pointer with a 20-inch inside spread that scored 138.
