The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources recently completed an addition to the Archery Range at the Webb Wildlife Center in Hampton County.
In addition to the four bag targets at various distances from 10 to 30 yards on the flat range, bowhunters and other archers now have a large elevated platform where they can practice shooting. The new tower provides a safe platform 14 feet off the ground for archers to shoot at three-dimensional targets at varying distances in a realistic wooded hunting setting. All targets are provided, and the platform is large enough for two archers to shoot at the same time. The three-dimensional animal targets will range from 15 to 40 yards in the wooded area beside the archery tower. Bow hangers and benches have also been installed for the convenience of archers.
‘This is a great addition to our facility and will provide bowhunters a nice place to practice shooting from an elevated position’ said Jay Cantrell, S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife biologist at the Webb Wildlife Center. ‘The archery range will be used for youth shooting events and other organized archery events in the future. We’re hopeful the range will get a lot of use with the growing popularity of bowhunting and more kids taking up the sport through the National Archery in the Schools Program and other youth shooting events.’
The unmanned range is located a short distance from the Webb Center office and will be open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until dark except during days when deer hunts are conducted on Webb Wildlife Management Area. These dates will be posted at the range or interested users can call the Webb Center office for details. Use of the range is free of charge, and no license or permit is required. A complete list of rules and regulations are posted at the range. With safety being a priority for all users, archers should be aware that broadhead points are not allowed, and users of the elevated platform must wear a safety harness that they provide themselves.
‘We have safety cables on the platform that shooters can hook into with their harnesses that they use while hunting from treestands,’ Cantrell said.
