Entry of non-typical buck wins grand prize for firefighter
Chris Lambert, a 23-year-old Gaffney firefighter figured he was going to find a run-of-the-mill 8-point buck on the ground when he got down out of his tree stand the afternoon of Oct. 18.
He had dropped a nice buck that showed up under his stand, which was next to a Spartanburg County cutover. The buck was running six does, and when it presented a clean 50-yard shot, Lambert anchored it with a single blast from his .270 Savage.
Lambert entered the buck in South Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest on Oct. 27, and in mid-January, his name was drawn as the winner of the contest’s grand prize, a two-man, one-day deer hunt at Cherokee Run Plantation in Chesterfield, Co.
But the buck was special long before it was a contest winner. When Lambert got to it, he noticed a sticker point jutting backwards out of the right beam a few inches from the base. He also found a third beam, 4 inches long, protruding from a separate base on the skull next to the base of the right antler.
“We didn’t have any trail-camera pictures of this deer,” said Lambert, who lives in Spartanburg. “I just thought he was a nice 8-pointer when he came in running those six does.”
The buck weighed 173 pounds.
