High-school junior took two bucks on Oct. 19, entry wins monthly contest
Oct. 19 was a Sunday that 16-year-old Ivy Oates of Rock Hill will not soon forget. The junior at Rock Hill High School killed her first buck, a 5-pointer, around 5 p.m., right after climbing into a ladder stand on property in Lancaster County she was hunting with her father, Danny.
Two hours later, she literally doubled her pleasure with a 10-point buck. Two days later, she entered South Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck Contest, and two weeks to the day after taking her first two bucks, her entry was drawn as the winner of the monthly contest for October.
For being a monthly winner, she will receive a year’s subscription to the magazine and a $25 gift certificate to the Sportsman’s online Outdoor Store. She will also be eligible for the grand prize, a one-day hunt for two people at Cherokee Run Outfitters in Chesterfield Co. The grand prize will be awarded at the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic in Columbia next March.
Oates was hunting from a ladder stand when she killed the two bucks with her .243. The bigger buck was standing a scant 10 yards from the stand when she dropped it. The buck, which weighed 153 pounds had five points on each side and a spread of 16 inches.
“I’ve been hunting almost since I was born,” she said, “but these were the first bucks I’ve ever killed.”
