Backups are being drawn for Tier III hunts in case hunter who is drawn can’t attend
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has implemented a much-needed change to its popular Tier III permit hunts, allowing for “backup” hunters to take the place of hunters who are drawn for the special hunts but are unable to attend.
The first of four special hunts was held on the R. Wayne Bailey-Caswell Game Lands on Sept. 19-20. Others are schedule for Oct. 10-11 on the Bailey-Caswell Game Lands, Oct. 17-18 on the Johns River Game Lands in Burke County and Oct. 20-21 on the Roanoke River Wetlands Game Lands.
Five hunters were drawn for each of the four hunts, but this year, for the first time, five hunters were randomly drawn as replacements for any handicapped hunter who, for any reason, could not attend a hunt for which he was drawn.
The Tier III hunts are among the premier permit-only hunts that the Commission puts on. In addition to the five handicapped hunters drawn for each hunt, they can bring along a companion who can hunt with them. The Commission goes all out to assure a comfortable, safe and quality hunt. Many are around food plots planted on game lands, and large permanent blinds or special blinds like Hunt Master lifts are provided. In addition, staff assists in any way to locate and process game that’s killed, and one or two meals are provided by North Carolina Handicapped Sportsmen.
All Tier III hunts allow for five qualified sportsmen to be drawn from the pool of those that apply for a specific hunt – one in the coastal region, two in the Piedmont and one in the mountains.
Sportsmen who are drawn for specific hunts have been encourage to contact Commission staff a week or two before the hunt and let them know whether or not they will be attending the hunt. If they cannot, the Commission can contact the alternates in the order they were drawn to see if they can replace the first hunter.
