Hunting deer in the South dates to Native American times when it was required to put food on the table and clothes on the body. But with suburbia expanding into the countryside and the ill-conceived murderous rampages from the mentally deranged, some landowners with prime acreage are less than willing to grant permission to responsible hunters, especially when firearms are used. With the popularity of archery hunting on the rise, access to these lands may be possible when weapons are restricted.
Using only archery equipment can help hunters gain access to lands previously unavailable and provide a sense of safety. The last thing any landowner wants is for anybody to get killed on his or her land. While the likelihood of these types of disasters is a little better than winning the lottery, hunters and bystanders die every year from the discharge of hunting rifles and shotguns. These types of accidents happen too often, and many landowners are becoming less likely to grant hunters access.
Hunters who offer to use only archery equipment may remove a lot of landowner concerns. Additionally, hunters in ground blinds can take shots with a crossbow without being too concerned about a neighborhood or farm house 500 yards downrange. These types of shots could not be taken with a high- powered rifle that can effectively kill at over a mile away.
