NCBA members enjoy week at Butner-Falls of Neuse

Archery-only zones on several game lands are often places where big bucks (right) go when hunting pressure increases during gun season.

Butner-Falls of Neuse Game Land’s most-popular, archery-only zone is on the northern edge of the public lands in the Granville County section and mostly inside the limits of the town of Butner.

The area is a favorite of the N.C. Bowhunters Association, which holds an annual week-long member-guest camping/hunting session in October.

“We’ve had an annual fall hunt that runs during the middle of October from Saturday to Saturday,” said Joey Thompson, the NCBA Records Chairman. “(NCBA) likes Butner-Falls because it’s open (to hunting) six-days per week.

“We camp, have bonfires, cook three or four pigs, deer, make barbecue — and we actually kill some whitetails, although we do have a good time. Each year about 60 to 80 bowhunters harvest two or three bucks and around a dozen or so does.”

The NCBA is the state’s oldest and largest bow-hunters organization. Interested individuals may visit the web site at www.ncbowhunter.com for contact information and an events calendar, along with other features.
