Kannapolis 15-year-old kills 140-class buck

10-point buck had 8 scoreable points

Syrus Dellinger of Kannapolis, N.C. killed his best deer ever on Nov. 11 when he shot a 10-point buck that’s been gross green-scored at 140 inches.

When the young hunter took to the woods that evening, he was in good company. Branson Clement, who had killed a giant buck a couple of weeks earlier, joined Dellinger in a box stand on the private hunting lease in Anson County. The two were comparing notes when something interesting caught Dellinger’s eye.

“It was getting pretty late in the evening, and Branson and I were sitting there catching up talking. I looked up and saw a black dot about 150 yards away. Branson looked through his binoculars and said it had horns, so I looked through my scope, and I could tell it was a big deer. I said ‘that would be my biggest deer for sure,’” said Dellinger.

Big buck goes down

After that, things went pretty straight forward. Dellinger wasted no time. He got comfortable, placed his scope’s crosshairs on the deer, and pulled the trigger on his Remington .308. The buck sprinted off, and Dellinger and Clement heard it crash into a tree after running about 70 yards.

Dellinger killed the buck with a 150-yard shot from his Remington .308.

“We heard him crash, and once we got down, we found him pretty quickly. We walked right up to him,” he said.

Dellinger and his hunting comrades had only seen one trace of evidence that this deer had visited their property before.

“We had one trail camera photo of him from late July or early August. He was in velvet. We had never seen him otherwise,” he said.

Aaron Hill from Hill’s Taxidermy in Wadesboro, N.C. is creating a mount to help preserve the lifetime memory for the 15-year-old, who said he appreciates all the help and support of his friends and family that made the hunt possible.

“I’m really thankful to all my friends and hunting buddies, and to my family for raising me in an environment of hunting and the outdoors,” he said.
