Buck weighed 185 pounds
Andrew Lewis of Loris, SC killed a 13-point brute on Sept. 3, 2024 during an Horry County hunt from an elevated stand.
Lewis knew of the deer’s presence for several months leading up to deer hunting season. He contemplated not targeting the deer, in order for it to grow bigger.
“I’ve watched this deer on camera since June. I had been debating whether or not to give him another year because of the potential with all his character,” said Lewis.
Ultimately, he decided to add this buck to his target list.
“I decided that he most likely wouldn’t make it through the season,” he said.
Lewis was getting photos of the deer on a regular basis all the way through the end of August.
“He was coming regularly, morning and evening, until the last week of August. Then he started getting more inconsistent,” he said.
The buck made a trail cam appearance one morning in early September. So Lewis went back, looking for him that evening.
“He showed back up Sept. 3 at 5:30 in the morning, and I was back waiting on him that evening,” he said.
He had the chance to shoot several other bucks, including a 10-pointer. But he sat tight, hoping to see the 13-point buck. His patience paid off.
“At 8:31, I saw him coming through the cutdown. He acted hesitant to step out. Finally, he stepped out and quartered to me,” he said. “I put my sights on his shoulder and dropped him in the corn pile.”
It’s not the biggest buck Lewis has killed, but he said it’s got something else.
“I’m proud of this deer. He’s not my biggest, but you can’t take the character away from him,” he said.
Lewis shot the buck with a 7mm-08 from 170 yards away.
