Thomasville, N.C. hunter kills 9-point buck, wins December Bag-A-Buck contest

James Hamby of Thomasville, NC won the December Bag-A-Buck contest.

Hunter wins 1-year subscription to Carolina Sportsman, $25 gift certificate

James Hamby of Thomasville, N.C., has won Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest for December with his entry of a big Randolph County buck he killed on Dec. 21.

Hamby’s prize includes a one-year subscription to Carolina Sportsman and a $25 gift certificate to the Sportsman’s online Outdoor Store.

And he can thank his wife.

“I had trail-camera picks of another big deer, an 11-pointer, and this buck was running with him,” said Hamby, “Hambone” on CarolinaSportsman.com. “I wasn’t planning on hunting, but my wife said, ‘You need to get up and go hunting and get us some meat.”

That morning, around 7:30, a small doe appeared close to his stand, followed by the buck.

“He came in head down, and when I clicked off the safety, he looked up. He put his head back down, and that was it.”

Hamby’s buck had a basic 9-point frame with a handful of sticker points around the bases.
