Coyote competition open to North and South Carolina hunters
Coyotes. They are everywhere in North Carolina, and it’s no secret that the predators have put a hurting on the deer population throughout the state. The NCWRC has some fairly liberal hunting policies for the animals, but it still doesn’t seem to help out much. 704 Outdoors, a hardcore group of hunters based around Stanly County, is doing their best to bring awareness to the damage coyotes inflict on the populations of more desirable game animals like deer. Next month, 704 Outdoors will host their third annual Carolina Coyote Classic in Albermarle. Feb. 26, 27, and 28 are the dates of the “C3 Tournament,” which the organization said is to help with predator control and bring like-minded sportsman together.
The competition will be broken into two classes – an adult class and a youth class. There will also be a trapping class for those who wish to trap. Prizes will be given for biggest coyote in each class, as well as most coyotes in each class. Prizes include a rifle package, light packages, cash, taxidermy, and more.
A registration fee of $25 gets you into the contest, and another $2 makes you eligible for the biggest coyote award. The event will be hosted at the former Stanly County Fairgrounds, which is home to the American Legion Post 76.
The hunt officially begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, and ends on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. Weigh-in will take place all three days of the tournament. On Friday and Saturday, the scales will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
This competition is open to hunters in both North Carolina and South Carolina, and hunters must follow the regulations in the states they are hunting in, as well as be licensed in those states.
If you’d like to get some refresher training before the competition, you’re in luck. 704 Outdoors will be holding a seminar on coyote hunting at the Bass Pro Shops at Concord Mills on Feb. 13. The seminar starts at 6 p.m. in the Conservation Room on the second floor.
