Continuing Ed: a big aid

Beyond the limits and regulations set by the state wildlife agencies, landowners and hunters can go a step further to promote habitat and wildlife management on their own lands. Fortunately, both North and South Carolina have wildlife studies programs at several universities and colleges available for anyone looking to gain knowledge in the wildlife field.

On the university level, N.C. State and Clemson both have significant bachelor and advanced-degree programs in the wildlife and agriculture fields that can provide a wealth of knowledge to hunters looking to gain critical knowledge.

Beyond the standard degree programs, Clemson offers a unique, five-session online course targeted at landowners and wildlife enthusiasts: the Master Wildlifer program. It provides for wildlife management on private lands covering: foundations of wildlife-habitat management, deer biology and management, coyote and wild hog management, non-game wildlife conservation and wild turkey biology and management. For info, contact Clemson at 864-656-0606.

Clemson has also partnered with the Quality Deer Management Association to offer the Deer Steward Course Program, a self-paced, online program that provides a comprehensive understanding of the key principles of deer and habitat biology, ecology, and management from the leading experts in the industry. On the technical college level, Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) in Conway, S.C., offers a thorough wildlife management associates degree program. Students can learn about a wide variety of wildlife related topics from wildlife management and forestry to agriculture. For more information, contact Brian Clark at 843-520-1418.
