On November 7th during an evening deer hunt I was blessed with the opportunity to take my first bear. I had just gotten into the deer blind (the same one where I took a big buck a few weeks prior) and got settled in after messing with my compound bow to see if I had enough room to draw it back.. I didn’t so I set my 308 Ruger rifle up. It was about 25 minutes into my hunt when I heard a lot of noise in the woods in front of me. I saw a black ball roll down a tree and hit the ground, I immediately said to myself “you’ve got to be kidding me.” Earlier in the week I had gotten two pictures of a bear on my trail camera, I didn’t think much of it because I had gotten one picture of a bear back in September but never seen anything else of it. When the bear got to the bottom of the tree it turned and started coming up the creek bed toward me. I took a video of it coming in and everyone I’ve shown laughs because all you can hear is me breathing like I just ran a marathon. My nerves were TORE up. The bear made her way up the creek and came into the area where I had my corn pile. Naturally, it laid down directly behind a tree where all I could see was its head. It laid there and ate corn for 15 minutes or so before getting up and moving into a spot where I could make a shot. I put the crosshairs right behind the shoulder and pulled the trigger. I knew immediately that I had hit it by the way it jumped into the air and ran. As I watched the bear go all I could think of was hoping I made a good shot and it would go down. I watched it go into the distance and sat in my blind till dark to give it time. After a eventful night of blood trailing I finally found my kill around 10:30 pm but it was too late to try and retrieve it out of a thicket. I went back in the next morning after not hardly sleeping at all to get it out. The bear was a older sow and she weighed 165 pounds. The most unique thing about her was she had a beautiful white V on her neck! I plan on having a shoulder mount done to show off the white and my first bear!
